A Midsummer Night’s failure

A review of A Midsummer Night's Dream

Had it not been for the hilarious rendition of the play within the play, this production would have had no saving graces.  What was the point of the Harpo lookalikes throwing fake snow about?

Titania's accent was at times impenetrable and the ridiculous wrestling match between the two men distracted completely from the wittiness of the dialogue between the two women.

It seemed the director had fallen in love with the thought of turning summer into winter and lost sight of the subtleness of the text.  The simmering love/hate relationship between Oberon and Titania was never properly conveyed.

I have seen many productions of this play (mostly at the Lyceum) and enjoyed many of them, but if this was my first foray into the works of Shakespeare, I would be wondering what all the fuss was about.
