A review of The Guid Sisters
Unfortunately I felt moved to leave this production at the interval!
The shouted dialogue, the hyper-posturing and flawed slapstick (see the NT current production of Servant of Two Masters for textbook model) made it impossible to believe in the 'reality' of the social setting.
There was an excessively mechanical rhythm to the social interaction that did not properly reflect the modulations of voice, intensity of feeling and gesture that characterise real personal interaction. I simply could not escape the persistent awareness of the 'directedness' of every movement, placement and slapstick interlude.
I acknowledge the evident pleasure the audience experienced and wanted to enter into their suspension of belief but, despite the energy of the production, all I could observe were actors being excessively demonstrative in their acting!
