Doctors of Philosophy - Edinburgh International Book Festival 2018
Doctors of Philosophy
by Muriel Spark
Sunday 19 August, 5.30pm
Several of Spark’s novels have been adapted for theatre and film, but Doctors of Philosophy is the only one she wrote specially for the stage. In partnership with Edinburgh International Book Festival we present a rehearsed reading of the entire play. Hardly ever seen on stage since its London premiere in 1962, this is a very special one-off performance edited by David Greig and directed by Marilyn Imrie. The actors; the scenery; reality itself: everything is unreliable in this astonishing piece of theatre which demonstrates Muriel Spark at the peak of her powers. In a London theatre world dominated by ‘angry young men’, a sophisticated play by a Scottish middle-class woman was destined to gain little traction in the 1960s. Now its time has finally come.
Please note that The Lyceum has a limited allocation of 20 tickets for this event, once these are sold you can still buy tickets from Edinburgh International Book Festival from 26 June.
