Knives in Hens
by David Harrower, with music by Mr McFall’s Chamber
performed by a company of 25+ actors

A unique concert reading of one of the most successful Scottish plays of the 20th century in memory of Pauline Knowles (1967-2018).

"I have no name for the thing which is in my head.  It is not envy.  It is more than envy.  It does not scare me.  I must look close enough to look at what it is."

David Harrower’s haunting debut play quickly established him as one of Scotland’s leading playwrights.  Set in a pre-industrial rural community, it tells of a young woman, her ploughman husband and the feared, hated village miller — and the woman’s solitary quest for learning and her growing consciousness as the world begins to shift towards a new industrial age.

Knives in Hens was first produced in 1995 at the Traverse Theatre, this performed reading of Knives in Hens reunites many of the original production team, in tribute to the late Pauline Knowles, who famously created the lead role of 'the Young Woman', and who passed away last year.  In this unique version of the play, more than twenty-five actors share the archetypal role of 'the Young Woman' in varying combinations and accumulations, in a new approach to this famous contemporary classic.

‘Harrower’s play is a marvellous, mysterious thing: a drama of real passion written in a stark, puritan style.’
