By Brian Friel
Directed by John Dove
"They remember that day... endlessly raking over those dead episodes that can't be left at peace."
Set in a remote and rundown army camp in County Donegal, Living Quarters tells the story of the fateful day that Commandant Frank Butler returns from a successful UN mission in the Middle East. Through clever use of a narrator we are introduced to Frank's grown-up children and his new wife, Anna, who is thirty years his junior, and slowly the family's secrets start to unravel, with events gradually moving towards a startling conclusion.
With searing observation that embraces humour and a touching emotional candour, Friel unpicks the selected history of illusion and reality that underlies all families.
Newly appointed Associate Artist John Dove directs this moving and emotional drama on family breakdown, following his critically acclaimed production of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons last season. We are delighted that this will be the first UK production of Friel’s powerful and unusual play.
